Day 83...Less than 500 Miles! August 02, 2017 I woke up to the sound of some of others in the shelter packing up, so I looked at my watch to see how much more time I had to sleep and just as I was picking it up, the alarm started to go off. I laid there stretching for a few minutes, and then started packing up. I was the first one to leave the shelter. It was an uphill day. The skies were mostly clear, and it was fairly warm. Today was also a quiet day. I did cross a major milestone - now less than 500 miles to Mt. Katahdin! I stopped

Day 82...Crossroads August 01, 2017 Today, I did a lot of thinking about the trail ahead and what I was going to do next. To be honest, I thought seriously about just calling it quits and coming back next summer and finishing the trail then. I placed a call to my father and to my brother Max. They were in Michigan, where Max had just completed his competition in track and field nationals. Both Max and my dad encouraged me to finish the journey and challenged me to come up with a plan. After the call, I sat in the middle of a

Day 81...Back on the Trail July 31, 2017 I woke up at 5:30 am, even though my alarm was set for 6:30. I guess I am used to waking up early. I laid back down after figuring out what time it was, but I wasn't able to really fall back to sleep. So I got up, packed up all my equipment, and sat there thinking for about an hour about the challenges ahead. Around 7 am, I went downstairs and Mr. Sutton offered me and the other hikers a ride to the donut shop, where people usually give rides to hikers heading back onto the trail. On our way,

Day 80...Change of Pace July 30, 2017 When I woke up this morning, I was much disoriented. It took me a couple seconds to figure out what direction I was facing. After I was oriented, I packed up as quietly as possible, nobody else was awake in the shelter. It was only 2.8 miles into the town, where I planned on doing laundry and buying food. Once I got to the road crossing, I stuck out my thumb and hitched a ride into Manchester Central, Vermont. It only took a few minutes before someone gave me a ride. Once I got to town, I went
